Introduction to EPA's New "How's My Waterway" Tool
By Kiki Schneider, U.S. EPA Office of Water
Communities use how my waterway to learn about their watershed. When a watershed is shown to have pollution or other issues, it inspires people to get involved to protect and restore their waterways. By displaying all of this information visually it gives this data more perspective and transparency which results in the drive for change and innovation.
How's My Waterway provides a comprehensive overview of water quality data and information in the United States on three different scales: community, state and national. How’s My Waterway answers questions about aquatic life, eating fish, swimming, drinking water, restoration and protection. This session will provide information on how to:
- Explore information about their drinking water, local stream conditions, and whether their waterways are suitable for swimming or eating fish and if they support aquatic life.
- Discover if their waterways are being monitored and the location of local monitoring stations.
- Learn what issues might be affecting their waterways.
- Learn about environmental justice demographic indicators in their community’s watershed.
- Inspire communities to restore and protect their waters.
