Understanding Relationships between Flow, Habitat, and Biology in Urban Streams

In stream ecosystems, urbanization leads to increased rates of erosion and habitat simplification. This habitat degradation often has biological consequences, such as decreased species richness. The amount and speed of storm water runoff entering urban streams leads to degraded habitat and erosion of the streambed. Traditional stream restoration is costly and often limited to small areas with easy access. As Ohio uses the fish and invertebrate community to assess the degradation (and recovery) of stream ecosystems, a scalable, low-cost method of stream restoration is needed to address habitat loss in urban streams. Log jams are abundant in natural streams but low in urban streams. Wood can play an important role in streams by reducing water velocity, creating pools, decreasing erosion, and providing habitat for aquatic animals. This reduction in wood may be due to lack of available wood in the riparian zone, intentional removal by managers, or high rates of transport. Over the past 5 years, we have worked collaboratively with agency partners in an experimental watershed in Cincinnati to understand the biological and physical characteristics and explore management interventions to improve the health of an urban headwater stream. This talk will focus the biological response of stream fishes to the flow patterns and considerations for using fish as indicators of habitat recovery, as well as the potential for a low-cost management intervention (wood additions) to improve stream habitat.
