Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and associated algal toxins have impacted lakes and rivers throughout Ohio over the past decade. Caused by various species of cyanobacteria, these blooms often produce toxins that impact water supplies, recreation, and agricultural users. This presentation will provide a summary of the problem, an overview of these impairments, and discuss observations and recent trends in species composition and abundance. The presentation will also an overview of common treatment methods and discuss several promising new technologies being used in Ohio to control these blooms.
